This oil painting has been created in very somber colouration’s and it is said to have been produced during the artists Henri Matisse dark period.
During the time that this portrait was produced in 1902 the artist was experiencing a difficult period in his life which began in 1901 and finished in 1903.
In May 1902 Matisse life was turned upside down when his family was hit with financial scandal. During a long investigation Massissse was left as the main earner for his extended family which consists of seven mouths to feed.
Although this artwork has been displayed in many galleries today this is now being shown at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery Art museum in Buffalo New York.
This portrait is produced in oil and has been paper mounted on to canvas. The portrait measures just 72.5 × 54.5 cm.
